This year’s badminton tournament was successfully held on Sunday, 14 May 2017 at Singapore Badminton Hall. The tournament started off with fierce competition between the players during preliminary rounds as the players vie for a spot in the knock-out stages. Many new faces supported the event this year, proving yet again the continuous interest in the sport.
In the open doubles semi-finals, Andreas Salim and Bryan Ui fought hard against Loh Jun Hui and Gabriel Wu in a thrilling match and emerged as winners in 3 sets. On the other court, reigning Men’s Singles Champion partnered reigning Mixed Doubles Champion Tang Jia Miin and cruised to the finals, beating Chris Tan and Chua Tee Hong in the process. In the finals, a close fight between Andreas Salim & Bryan Ui and Thomson Tng & Tang Jia Miin resulted in a tight show down with Thomson & Jia Miin clinching the title this year yet again.
For veteran doubles, Navin Kumar and Quek Song Chua formed a formidable partnership as they sailed smoothly to the finals but lost narrowly to seasoned partners Pek Kim Hock and Ting Leung Ling in the finals. At 63 years of age, Quek still has plenty left in him.
In the mixed doubles event, reigning champion Tan You Hwa partnered with Foong Lih Yu this year. This powerhouse partners sailed through the semi-finals and finals and clinched first position this year, winning Kuah Huat Hin and Sindy Ong from SRC in the finals.
Finally, for men’s singles, up and rising star Michael Chandra, proved that he is Keppel’s best player by clinching the men’s singles title without dropping a single set. In the finals, he beat Farid Udin in straight sets.
Once again, it was an exciting tournament this year for all Keppelite badminton enthusiasts and we definitely look forward to next year’s tournament.
